Every spring in Washington, DC, cherry blossom trees open up and bloom, and the city celebrates with a festival and a parade. These trees, a gift from Japan in 1912, create a pink canopy in parks and roadsides across the town.

This year, I was in the US capital during the peak blooming period—and saw the petals open up. A thunderstorm came into town a few days later, and sprinkled these white and pink petals across the ground. In this photo essay, I share some images from this colorful season.
